01 / The brief

Create visual tension with limited space and equipment.

The locations restricted camera placement and lighting. With a limited budget and basic equipment, the cinematography needed to make practical use of the available spaces, lenses and existing light.

02 / My contribution

Translate the director’s intent into a visual approach.

  • Contributed to storyboards and shot lists, discussing character emotion and scene expression with the director.
  • Designed composition, camera positions, movement, lens choices and lighting.
  • Operated the camera on set and worked with a three-person camera and lighting team.

The director led the film’s overall creative direction. I collaborated on the visual approach as Director of Photography.

03 / Strategy & execution

Plan carefully, then use the constraints.

Confined compositions

Use narrow locations to create a sense of pressure, choosing framing and focal lengths that emphasise the space.

Practical lighting

Use existing light sources, shadows, contrast and local illumination to build tension without relying on extensive equipment.

Pre-production clarity

Prepare storyboards and a shot list before filming so that camera and lighting decisions can be made efficiently on set.
